The main objective is to reach the end of each act, defeat the boss, and collect the Chaos Emeralds by completing special stages. Signature mechanics include the spin dash for sudden bursts of speed, character-specific moves like Tails' flight or Knuckles' climbing, and the constant risk/reward of maintaining momentum to avoid spikes and pits.
