Sprint Master came out for the Atari 2600 in 1988, a late release for the system developed by Atari themselves. It arrived when many players had moved on to newer consoles, but it offered a surprisingly polished take on top-down racing for those still loyal to the 2600.

You control a small car viewed from above, racing against another vehicle either controlled by a friend or the computer. The main goal is straightforward: complete three laps before your opponent does. The tracks feature oil slicks that send you spinning helplessly if you hit them, and dirt sections that drastically slow your movement, forcing careful steering. You can pick up wrench icons to improve traction on loose surfaces, or collect lightning bolts to get a temporary speed boost. The game moves quickly and demands sharp reflexes, especially when avoiding hazards or fighting for position. It feels tense and competitive, especially with two players battling for the lead.
