Star Wars on the NES is one of those games that feels like it’s trying to do a little bit of everything—you start off jumping between platforms in the Death Star’s hangar, blasting stormtroopers, then suddenly you’re in an X-wing dodging TIE fighters. The controls take some getting used to (why does Luke jump like he’s wearing lead boots?), but once you adjust, there’s something weirdly satisfying about the mix of side-scrolling action and space combat. Just don’t expect it to hold your hand—those pixel-perfect jumps in the detention block still haunt me.
