Game Overview

Super Mario Bros 2 (PRG 0) is a weird little platformer where you pull vegetables out of the ground and throw them at enemies instead of jumping on them. It feels off at first—like a Mario game wearing someone else’s clothes—but the more you play, the more it clicks.

You pick between Mario, Luigi, Peach, or Toad, and each handles differently. Peach can float for a second, which is handy, while Luigi’s high jumps make some sections trivial. The levels are these strange, dreamlike places with shy guys and birdo bosses. It’s not what you expect, but that’s what makes it interesting.

Some parts drag—digging through sand for keys gets old—but the music and oddball enemies keep it fresh. Super Mario Bros 2 (PRG 0) isn’t the usual run-and-jump affair, and that’s why I keep coming back to it.
