Game Overview

Man, The Fidelity Chessmaster 2100 takes me back. Firing this up on MS-DOS felt like booting up a secret weapon—suddenly your beige box of a computer could outplay half the chess club. The AI surprised me right away; it didn’t just blunder pieces like other games from that era. Start on "Novice," and it’d humor you with polite trades. Crank it up to "Expert," though? Brutal. I lost a queen in three moves once and never recovered.

What I loved was how stripped-down it was—just a clean 2D board, simple notation, and that satisfying click when you moved a piece. No tutorials, no hand-holding. You either knew the Sicilian Defense or you learned it the hard way. Even now, there’s something about the way it calculates that feels sharper than a lot of modern chess apps trying to dazzle you with animations. Perfect for when you just want to play, not be impressed.

Still holds up if you can get it running. Just don’t expect mercy after the first five moves.

Each game uses different controls, most DOS games use the keyboard arrows. Some will use the mouse , "Alt" ,"Enter" and "Space bar".
