I first played The Guardian Legend on the NES back in 1990, a game published by Broderbund. You control a female android who can transform into a spacecraft, navigating two distinct types of stages. The main goal is to explore the alien planet Naju, collecting keys to unlock its core and prevent it from colliding with Earth. On foot, you explore maze-like corridors, shooting enemies with a chargeable laser and hunting for items in overhead-view dungeons. In shooter sections, you fly through vertically scrolling stages, dodging bullet patterns and destroying larger enemy formations. The game is challenging, with a steady difficulty curve that demands careful exploration and quick reflexes. It feels satisfying to master the blend of exploration and intense combat.
