I first encountered Akalabeth on a friend's MS-DOS machine, a game from 1980 developed by Richard Garriott and published by California Pacific Computer. It was one of those early computer RPGs that felt raw and unrefined, a glimpse into what would later become the Ultima series. The graphics were simple, the interface clunky, but it had a certain charm that pulled you in, a product of its time when games were experiments as much as entertainment.

You create a character, choosing between a warrior or a mage, and then set out to complete quests given by Lord British. The main goal is to venture into dungeons, defeat monsters, and eventually take down the evil Mondain. You explore the world screen by screen, fighting creatures in first-person perspective with a sword or bow, depending on your class. The dungeons are maze-like, rendered in wireframe 3D, and navigating them requires careful mapping and a lot of patience. Combat is straightforward but unforgiving; one wrong move against a Balrog or other tough enemy can mean instant death. The pacing is slow, deliberate, and the difficulty is high, demanding persistence and strategy. Playing Akalabeth feels like stepping into a rough draft of fantasy gaming history, where every victory is hard-earned and every mistake is punishing.


Each game uses different controls, most DOS games use the keyboard arrows. Some will use the mouse , "Alt" ,"Enter" and "Space bar".
