Game Overview

Ever stumble across an NES game that feels like it slipped through the cracks of time? White Lion Densetsu is one of those—a weird little action-adventure thing where you play as some sword-swinging warrior hunting down giant monsters straight out of Japanese folktales. The first ten minutes are all chopping through bamboo forests and dodging these weird, floating tengu demons while the soundtrack hits you with that classic chiptune mystique.

It’s got that old-school Zelda vibe where you’re poking around for hidden paths, but the combat’s way more deliberate—mistime a swing, and some yokai will absolutely wreck you. The boss fights are the real highlight, though. There’s this one battle against a fire-breathing lion where the screen just erupts in flickering orange pixels, and suddenly you’re scrambling to remember which bushes are safe to hide behind. Not gonna lie, it’s janky in places (good luck figuring out some puzzles without a guide), but there’s something charming about how hard it commits to its weird folklore aesthetic. If you’ve got a soft spot for obscure NES deep cuts, this one’s a trip.
