Game Overview

Advanced Civilization, released in 1995 by Avalon Hill as part of their MS-DOS Classic Games series, is a digital adaptation of the classic board game. It arrived during a period when strategy games were gaining complexity on home computers, offering a deep, turn-based experience that demanded careful planning and negotiation. The game simulates the growth and struggles of ancient cultures, pitting players against each other and the unpredictability of history itself.

You guide a civilization from its humble beginnings, managing cities, trade, and technological progress while fending off disasters like famine and civil war. The main objective is to outlast rival civilizations by achieving cultural, economic, and territorial dominance. Key mechanics include trading commodity cards with opponents (each hiding potential calamities) and navigating a tech tree that unlocks critical advances like bronze working and astronomy. The pacing is deliberate, often stretching over hours, with difficulty stemming from both opponent cunning and random event cards. It feels like a tense, cerebral marathon where every alliance could collapse and every calculated risk might save or ruin your empire.

Each game uses different controls, most DOS games use the keyboard arrows. Some will use the mouse , "Alt" ,"Enter" and "Space bar".
