Game Overview

So Battle Chess on NES is chess, but way more dramatic. Instead of just plucking pieces off the board, your pawns and knights actually fight when they capture—little animated battles where a rook might smash a bishop with a mace or a queen pulls some fancy swordplay. There are different animations for every possible matchup, which sounds excessive until you see your pawn somehow take down a knight with a lucky spear throw.

It's got all the standard chess stuff—30,000 opening moves, 10 difficulty levels—but honestly, half the fun is just watching the fights play out. (You can turn them off if you're serious, but why would you?) Oh, and if you've got a buddy with a modem or serial cable, you can challenge them too—though good luck finding someone with that setup these days.
