Game Overview

Bomberman Max: Hikari no Yuusha is one of those Game Boy Color gems that somehow makes blowing stuff up feel wholesome. You play as Hikari, the "hero" Bomberman—which mostly means you're still planting bombs everywhere, but now there's a cute little story wrapped around it. The first few levels ease you in with simple maze-like puzzles, but soon you're juggling power-ups, dodging weird floating enemies, and figuring out how to reach that one stupid block in the corner without blowing yourself up.

What I love is how it mixes classic Bomberman chaos with light RPG elements. You collect these little orbs to upgrade your speed, bomb range, and other stats—nothing too deep, but it gives that satisfying "just one more level" pull. And yeah, the multiplayer battles are still here if you've got a friend and a link cable. The pixel art has that perfect late-90s GBC charm, all bright colors and squishy explosions. It's the kind of game you start playing for five minutes and suddenly realize an hour's gone by.

Definitely one of the better Bomberman spin-offs if you're into the adventure-style versions.
