Battle as Goku and other Z fighters in one-on-one matches, scan cards for special moves, and defeat opponents in a tournament to unlock new cards.
Bandai released Datach - Dragon Ball Z - Gekitou Tenkaichi Budou Kai in 1992 for the Nintendo Entertainment System. It was part of a short-lived peripheral line, the Datach Joint Rom System, which used physical cards to alter gameplay. This approach felt novel at the time, a curious hybrid of digital action and tangible collectibles during the NES's later years.
You control Goku and other Z fighters through one-on-one battles, using a card scanner peripheral to input special moves. The main objective is to defeat opponents across a tournament bracket, with victory unlocking new cards for your deck. Signature mechanics include matching attack and defense cards in real time during fights, and timing your physical card scans correctly to execute signature techniques like the Kamehameha. The pacing is deliberate, almost methodical, due to the physical interaction required, and a mistimed scan can easily cost you the match. It feels like a hands-on, slightly cumbersome but earnest attempt to blend card strategy with fighting game action.
