Game Overview

Okay, so "Digimon: Mewtwo Strikes Back" is one of those Game Boy Color titles that makes you go, "Wait, what?" at first glance. No, Mewtwo doesn't actually crash the Digimon party—somebody just had fun with the naming. What you do get is a surprisingly solid Digimon RPG crammed into that tiny cartridge. You’ll start with your usual rookie Digimon (Agumon fans, rejoice), then grind battles, hunt for evolution items, and panic when your Digimon suddenly decides it’s time to digivolve into something completely unexpected.

The pixel art’s got that classic late-90s charm—bright colors, chunky sprites, and battle animations that make you miss blowing into cartridges. It’s not as polished as Pokémon Crystal, but there’s something endearing about the janky dialogue and weird side quests (why is that Numemon hanging out in the sewer?). Pro tip: save often. Some evolutions are borderline impossible to backtrack from.

If you’ve got a soft spot for forgotten monster-raising games, this one’s a weird little time capsule. Just maybe don’t yell at your Game Boy when Mewtwo never shows up.
