When a fight starts, it shifts to a card battle system where you use a custom deck to perform attacks, blocks, and special moves like the Kamehameha or Spirit Bomb. The main goal is to progress through the story by winning these battles and collecting Dragon Balls, which can be used to revive fallen allies. The pacing can be slow between fights, and some of the mechanics feel a bit clunky, but building your deck and pulling off long combos is surprisingly satisfying. It feels like a strange but earnest attempt to mix two genres that don't usually go together.
