Game Overview

Estpolis Denki: Yomigaeru Densetsu came out in 1999 for the Game Boy Color, developed by Neverland and published by Taito. It was part of that late 90s wave of handheld RPGs that tried to squeeze console-scale ambition into a pocket-sized screen, and it stood out for its detailed sprite work and surprisingly involved mechanics.

You control Wain, a young man from a line of heroes, and eventually gather a party of up to nine characters, each with distinct abilities. The main goal is to stop the return of the Sinistrals, ancient beings threatening the world. Exploration happens screen by screen, with turn-based combat that lets you swap party members mid-fight to adapt to different enemies. Dungeons are filled with environmental puzzles that require specific character skills, like using a bow to hit distant switches or bombs to clear blocked paths. The pacing is deliberate, and some later puzzles and boss fights demand careful planning. Playing it feels like slowly unraveling a dense, tactical adventure where every character swap and item use matters.
