Game Overview
Final Fantasy III is where the series really started playing with job classes—you get to switch your party between black mages, warriors, dragoons, and all sorts of other roles whenever you want. At first, I just stuck with the basic setup, but messing around with different combinations (like turning everyone into thieves to hoard gil early) is half the fun.
The story’s classic FF: four orphans, a mysterious crystal, and a world that needs saving. It’s simple, but there’s something charming about how straightforward it is compared to later games. The NES version never made it outside Japan originally, so the DS remake was a lot of people’s first time with it—and it holds up surprisingly well, even if the difficulty spikes can be brutal.
If you’ve only played the newer Final Fantasy games, this one feels refreshingly no-nonsense. Just expect to grind a bit when those sudden boss fights wreck you out of nowhere.
