Play Final Fantasy Legend, The Online

You grab a mismatched party and climb a tower that might be heaven, feeding monsters random meat drops to make them stronger—it’s clunky but weirdly satisfying. The soundtrack’s better than it has any right to be.

Game Overview

Final Fantasy Legend on the Game Boy is actually the first SaGa game—Square just slapped the FF name on it for the West. You pick a ragtag crew (humans, mutants, or monsters—mutants get weird random stat boosts, which is either fun or annoying depending on your luck) and climb this massive tower that supposedly leads to paradise.

It’s janky in that classic early Game Boy way—battles are super simple, and monster allies evolve by eating meat drops (yes, really). But there’s something weirdly charming about piecing together your team and grinding through those repetitive floors. The music’s surprisingly good too, for a chiptune soundtrack.

Don’t go in expecting a polished RPG—it’s more like a rough draft of the SaGa weirdness that came later.
