Game Overview

I picked up Final Fantasy I & II: Dawn of Souls on Game Boy Advance back in 2004, a Square Enix release that bundled the first two games with some notable updates. It was a solid way to experience these early RPGs on a handheld, fitting right into that era where classic console titles were finding new life on the go. The package felt complete, not just a straight port, with enough changes to make it worth a look even if you'd played the originals.

You control a party of four characters, choosing their classes at the start, and guide them across an overworld map into towns, caves, and dungeons. The main goal involves restoring light to the world by defeating four elemental fiends; you explore screen by screen, engage in turn based combat with swords, spells, and bows, and manage equipment and spells between battles. The pacing is deliberate, with some grinding expected, but the revised mechanics in Dawn of Souls (like removing the odd stat decreases on level up in FFII) smooth out some of the older frustrations. It feels methodical and satisfying to build your party and slowly push back the world's darkness.
