Final Fantasy VI Advance (EU) starts with this slow, eerie march through the snow as these armored soldiers trudge toward a mining town. The music sets the tone immediately - somber but with this undercurrent of something bigger brewing. You're controlling three characters right off the bat, which feels unusual for an RPG.
What sticks with me is how quickly the game establishes its world. Within an hour, you've got magitek armor, an empire pulling strings, and characters with actual depth instead of just being blank slates. The GBA version keeps everything that made the original great while adding some quality-of-life tweaks to the menus.
Some of the sprite work looks a little cramped on the small screen, but the colors pop nicely. The new translation reads better than the old SNES version too. It's still one of those RPGs where random battles can feel frequent, but the combat system has enough depth to stay interesting.
Final Fantasy VI Advance (EU) holds up surprisingly well if you can look past the occasional technical limitations of the hardware.
