You control a large cast of characters, switching perspectives as the story unfolds. Your main goal is to stop the empire and later a deranged jester from destroying the world. You explore towns and dungeons screen by screen, engage in turn based combat using magic and special abilities, and manage equipment for each party member. The pacing is deliberate, with moments of quiet exploration punctuated by intense boss fights. It feels expansive and personal, like guiding a group of flawed people through a world on the brink.
