Game Overview

Ganbare Goemon on NES is this weird little action-adventure game where you play as a noble thief—basically a Robin Hood type—running around feudal Japan. It feels a bit like Zelda but chopped into stages, and your goal is always to hunt down three passes hidden in boxes, secret spots, or sometimes just sold by random NPCs. The levels repeat after you beat them, but the ending changes depending on how far you get.

Goemon starts off pretty weak, but you can upgrade him with items you find or buy (though you’ll lose them if you take too many hits). The MSX2 version has co-op, which is cool, but the NES one’s solo-only. Honestly, it’s rough around the edges compared to later Goemon games, but there’s something charming about its simplicity. If you’re into retro stuff, it’s a neat time capsule.
