Game Overview

Gary Grigsby's War in Russia came out in 1993 for MS-DOS, published by Strategic Simulations, Inc. It was a serious wargame for its time, demanding a lot from players who were used to simpler, more abstract strategy titles. You controlled the entire Eastern Front of World War II, from the Finnish border down to the Black Sea, and the sheer scale was something most games didn't attempt.

You command hundreds of divisions, managing their supply, replacements, and movement across a massive hex-based map. The main objective is to either lead the Soviet Union to victory by pushing the Germans back to Berlin, or to successfully invade and conquer the USSR as the Axis. Key mechanics include detailed logistics, where you must repair railroads and manage truck convoys to keep your armies fueled, and complex combat resolution that factors in terrain, weather, and unit experience. The pacing is deliberate, often slow, and the difficulty is punishing; a single misplaced corps can lead to a catastrophic encirclement. It feels like conducting a symphony of chaos where every instrument is a division that might starve or break at any moment.

Each game uses different controls, most DOS games use the keyboard arrows. Some will use the mouse , "Alt" ,"Enter" and "Space bar".
