Play Knights of the Desert - The North African Campaign of 1941-43 Online
Pick Allies or Axis, then sweat over tank movements in shifting dunes—one wrong move and your column’s toast. Rommel wouldn’t approve, but you’ll learn.

I first played Knights of the Desert on an old MS-DOS machine back in the day; it was a 1983 release from Strategic Simulations, Inc. It fit right in with the kind of thoughtful, turn-based strategy games that were starting to appear on PCs then, focusing on historical conflicts without a lot of flash.
You take command of either Allied or Axis forces, directing tank units and infantry across a hex-based map of North Africa. The goal is to outmaneuver and destroy the enemy while managing supply lines and terrain effects. Key mechanics include detailed combat resolution, fog of war that hides enemy movements until spotted, and variable weather that impacts mobility. The pacing is deliberate, and mistakes are costly, making each decision carry weight. It feels like a tense game of chess played out over vast, empty desert.
Each game uses different controls, most DOS games use the keyboard arrows. Some will use the mouse , "Alt" ,"Enter" and "Space bar".
