Game Overview

I first played Mechanized Attack on the NES back in 1989. It was one of those games by SNK that showed up in rental stores without much fanfare, a side-scrolling shooter that felt a bit different from the usual Contra clones of the era. You control a lone soldier dropped into enemy territory, and the goal is straightforward: fight your way through each stage and destroy the enemy's central computer system.

You move from left to right, clearing screen after screen of robotic infantry, tanks, and even mechanical dogs. The main thing I remember is the weapon system; you start with a standard rifle, but you can pick up a flamethrower or a spread shot, though you lose them if you get hit. You also carry a limited supply of grenades, which are powerful but you have to be careful not to waste them on minor enemies. The pacing is relentless, and the difficulty is pretty unforgiving, with enemy fire coming from all directions. It feels tense and demanding, like every decision to jump, shoot, or throw an explosive actually matters.
