Game Overview

Momotarou Densetsu 1-2 came out on the Game Boy Color in 1999, developed by Hudson Soft. It was a two-in-one package that bundled two earlier Famicom RPGs into a single cartridge, which felt like a nice deal at the time. The game didn't push the hardware in any flashy way, but it fit right in with the kind of straightforward, portable adventures that felt right at home on Nintendo's handheld.

You control Momotarou, the boy from the peach, and travel across the land gathering a party of animal companions: a dog, a monkey, and a pheasant. Your goal is to defeat the ogres causing trouble, and you do this through turn-based combat, screen-by-screen exploration, and light puzzle-solving in towns and dungeons. The pace is relaxed, and the difficulty is fairly gentle, making it easy to pick up and play in short sessions. It feels warm and uncomplicated, like revisiting a familiar storybook.
