Game Overview

Pocky and Rocky came out for the Super Nintendo in 1993, developed by Natsume. It was part of that middle stretch of the SNES library, when developers were getting comfortable with the hardware and making games that felt polished and distinct. It didn't have the massive marketing of some titles, but it had a strong identity all its own.

You control a young shrine maiden named Pocky, or her tanuki partner Rocky, as you venture through screen by screen environments clearing out yokai and other monsters. Your main goal is to defeat the evil black mantle and restore peace, which involves navigating forests, caves, and temples. The core mechanics are your rapid shot, a close-range slash attack to deflect enemy projectiles, and a screen clearing bomb you collect and save for tight spots. The pacing is fast, and the difficulty is notable, especially with the number of enemies and bullets coming your way. It feels sharp and responsive, a game where your own reflexes are constantly being tested.
