Puyo Puyo on the NES was a Japan only release, but thanks to the Aeon Genesis translation, it's accessible to a wider audience. It's a straightforward puzzle game from that era, developed by Compile, and it fits right in with the kind of quick, competitive experiences the console was known for.

You control a cursor to rotate and place pairs of colored blobs, called Puyo, that fall from the top of the screen. The main goal is to connect four or more of the same color to clear them from the board. The signature mechanics involve setting up chain reactions by having new clears trigger subsequent falls and matches, and sending garbage blocks to your opponent's screen to disrupt their plans. The pacing is fast and the difficulty ramps up quickly, especially against a skilled opponent. It feels frantic and satisfying when you pull off a big combo.
