Game Overview

RealSports Volleyball came out in 1982 for the Atari 2600, published by Atari themselves. It was part of their RealSports line, which tried to bring more realistic sports games to the system. At the time, having a two player volleyball game at home felt like a small miracle, even with the hardware's obvious limits.

You control two players on your side of the net, moving them left and right to position under the ball. The main goal is to hit the ball over the net before it touches the sand, ideally in a way the other team can't return. Key mechanics include bumping the ball to set it up for a teammate (or yourself) and timing a button press to spike it hard across the net. The game starts slow but the difficulty ramps up quickly, demanding faster reactions and smarter positioning. It feels surprisingly tense for such a simple-looking game, especially when a long volley gets going.
