Children of Mana came out on the Nintendo DS in 2006, a time when Square Enix was really exploring what the dual screens and portability could do for their classic series. It was part of that early wave of DS games that tried to translate big console ideas into a handheld format, and it definitely carries that experimental spirit.

You control one of four young heroes tasked with protecting the Mana Tree and its world from a spreading corruption. The game is built around screen by screen exploration through a series of dungeons where you fight off monsters using either a sword, a flail, a bow, or a hammer. Your main goal is to complete these dungeons by defeating the boss waiting at the end, and along the way you collect fragments to power up your equipment and elemental spirits to aid you in combat. The pacing is methodical, almost repetitive, as you clear room after room of enemies, and the difficulty can spike unexpectedly on later floors. It feels like a straightforward, action focused grind set to some really pleasant music.
