Game Overview

Space Invaders X for the Game Boy Color, released in 2000, was developed by Taito and published by Activision in Japan. It arrived late in the handheld's life, when many players were already looking ahead to the Game Boy Advance, but it offered a portable take on a familiar arcade formula without trying to reinvent it.

You control a laser cannon at the bottom of the screen, moving left and right to shoot rows of descending aliens before they reach the ground. The main goal is to clear each wave while avoiding enemy fire and the occasional dive-bombing attack. Signature mechanics include the gradual increase in alien speed as their numbers thin, the use of destructible shields for temporary cover, and the appearance of a mysterious flying saucer that zips across the top of the screen for bonus points. The pacing is methodical but tense, and the difficulty builds steadily as you advance. It feels like a focused, no-frills challenge that still demands your full attention.
