Game Overview

World at War: Stalingrad was part of the MS-DOS Classic Games collection, a budget re-release of older titles that made them accessible in the late 1990s. The game was originally developed by Strategic Simulations, Inc., known for their detailed war simulations during the era of floppy disks and early CD-ROMs. It fits right into that period of PC gaming where complex, turn-based strategy was a niche but deeply engaging pursuit, demanding patience and careful planning from its players.

You control individual squads of Soviet soldiers, moving them across a grid-based map of the ruined city. The main objective is to capture key strategic points or eliminate all enemy units in each scenario. Signature mechanics include line-of-sight calculations for firing, managing morale and suppression, and using different unit types like riflemen, machine gunners, and snipers effectively. The pacing is deliberate and often slow, with a high difficulty that punishes careless advances and rewards tactical foresight. It feels like a tense, methodical chess match where every decision carries the weight of survival.

Each game uses different controls, most DOS games use the keyboard arrows. Some will use the mouse , "Alt" ,"Enter" and "Space bar".
