Play Ys (Japan) [En by David Mullen v1.0] Online

This one switches things up—side-scrolling sword swings instead of bump combat, with some janky jumps between killer soundtrack beats. Feels like Ys grew up overnight.

Game Overview

Ys III: Wanderers From Ys is where the series took a sharp turn—literally. Instead of the usual top-down view, you’re suddenly side-scrolling through towns and dungeons, slashing monsters with Adol’s sword in real time. No more bump combat—this time, you actually press the button to attack, which felt weirdly modern after the first two games.

Jumping’s new too, and you’ll need it. Some platforming sections are just awkward enough to make you miss the simplicity of walking into enemies to fight them. The music’s still fantastic, though, and the shift to action-platforming gives the world a different energy. Just don’t expect it to play like the Ys you remember.
