Game Overview

Colorful Dragon is one of those weird, unlicensed NES games that feels like it shouldn’t exist—but I’m glad it does. You play as a dragon that shoots literal rainbows at enemies, which sounds ridiculous (because it is), but the controls are surprisingly tight for a bootleg cart. The first level throws you into this neon-drenched world where everything moves just a little too fast, and you’ll probably die a few times before realizing the pink blobs are actually projectiles.

The music’s this chaotic chiptune mess that somehow works, and the sprite colors are so bright they practically bleed into each other. It’s like someone took Dragon Spirit, fed it a bag of candy, and then cranked the difficulty just to mess with you. Not gonna lie, the hit detection is janky in places, but that almost adds to the charm—like the developers knew they were making something unhinged and just ran with it.

If you’ve ever wondered what a fever dream looks like in 8-bit form, this is it. Just don’t expect it to play fair.
