It was developed by Arcade Studios, a name I didn't recognize then, but the game stood out with its detailed pixel art and fantasy theme. You control a lone knight tasked with rescuing a captured princess from a dragon's fortress. The game progresses screen by screen; you slash through skeletons and archers with your sword, dodge fire traps, and hunt for keys to unlock barred doors. Each stage culminates in a mini-boss, like a towering cyclops or a spell-casting sorcerer, that demands pattern recognition and quick reflexes. The pacing is deliberate, almost methodical, and the difficulty is unforgiving if you rush. Finishing a level gives you this real sense of earned progress, like you've genuinely outsmarted the dungeon rather than just muscled through it.
