Game Overview

Dragon Quest IV on the DS takes the classic NES/PS1 RPG and polishes it up with some smart tweaks. What I love is how it splits the story into chapters—you start by playing as different characters across the world, each with their own little struggles, before everything ties together. The first few hours feel like a collection of short stories where you’re a merchant haggling prices one minute, then a knight hunting monsters the next.

Battles use the touchscreen for menu commands, which works surprisingly well (though I still defaulted to buttons half the time). The new fifth chapter adds a revenge plot that wasn’t in the original, and there’s a casino to blow your gold on if grinding gets dull. Pro tip: don’t ignore the "tactics" settings for your AI party members—they’ll actually use spells properly if you tweak them.

It’s still very much a traditional Dragon Quest game at heart, right down to the quirky NPC dialogue and those iconic slime enemies. The chapter structure makes it easier to pick up for short sessions, too.
