Dragon Saber came out in 1990, an arcade release from Namco. It was part of that era where fantasy shooters were everywhere, but this one had a bit more going on with its two-player co-op and some unique mechanics. It didn't reinvent the wheel, but it stood out if you took the time to notice.

You control a knight on a flying dragon, moving through side-scrolling and top-down stages. Your main goal is to defeat the evil god that's corrupting the land. You use a sword for close attacks and a chargeable bow for ranged shots; collecting power-ups improves both. The game is structured screen by screen, clearing enemies to proceed, and you gather orbs to unlock magic spells that can clear the screen. The pacing is deliberate, not too fast, but the difficulty spikes with enemies that require precise timing to avoid. It feels methodical and rewarding when you learn the patterns.
