Final Fantasy 2 [hM02][T-Eng1.0] (J) is an NES RPG where you control four rebels fighting the Paramekian Empire. The first thing that stands out is how brutal the world feels—villages burn, people get hunted, and your party barely escapes alive in the opening.
The combat’s turn-based, but the progression system is weird in a good way. No levels—your characters grow based on what they do. Swing swords a lot? Strength goes up. Take hits? More HP. Cast spells? Magic gets stronger but your muscles fade. It makes every fight feel like training, even if it’s grindy.
Weapons and spells level up too, which is satisfying when you finally see that fire spell hit harder after dozens of battles. But the lack of direction can be rough—sometimes you just wander until you stumble into the next story beat.
