Final Fantasy 2 [T-Eng1.03] (J) is an NES RPG where you control four rebels fighting against an empire that burned their home. The first thing that stands out is how brutal the world feels—villages get destroyed, people die, and your party starts weak, barely surviving random encounters.
The leveling system is weird but interesting. Your stats grow based on what you do in battle—get hit a lot, and your HP goes up. Cast spells constantly, and your magic gets stronger while your strength drops. It forces you to think about how you fight, though grinding feels necessary at times.
Weapons and spells level up separately, which makes experimenting with different builds rewarding. But the combat itself is slow, and missing attacks happens way too often early on. The story’s darker than most NES RPGs, though the translation’s rough in spots. If you can push past the jank, there’s something unique here.
