Final Fantasy XII: Revenant Wings on the DS is basically the little sibling of the PS2 game, but don’t let that fool you—it’s got its own thing going on. Instead of the usual turn-based stuff, battles play out in real time with these floating islands as your battlefield. You’re still commanding Vaan and the crew, but now you’re also summoning these tiny warriors called Espers to fight alongside them. It’s kind of like an RTS-lite, where you’re constantly juggling between sending units to attack or pulling them back before they get wiped out.
The touchscreen controls actually work pretty well for this, letting you tap and drag units around without feeling clunky. And yeah, the story’s lighter than FFXII’s political drama, but there’s still plenty of sky pirates, ancient ruins, and that classic Final Fantasy charm. The sprites are surprisingly detailed for a DS game, too—watching your little army clash midair never gets old.
