Game Overview

I first encountered National Lampoon's Chess Maniac 5 Billion and 1 back in the MS-DOS days; it came out in 1993 from Spectrum Holobyte. It was part of that wave of games that tried to make traditional board games feel more like a video game experience, with a heavy dose of humor and personality. The National Lampoon branding promised something irreverent, and it definitely delivered on that front.

You control the chess pieces as you would in a standard game, but the real twist is the AI opponent. It constantly mocks your decisions, interrupts play with absurd animations, and sometimes outright cheats by moving pieces illegally. Winning a match doesn't just end the game; it triggers a wild, unpredictable reward sequence that might involve anything from cartoon explosions to surreal mini-games. The pacing is erratic, and the difficulty can feel arbitrary, but the sheer unpredictability makes each session memorable. Playing it feels like arguing with a sarcastic friend who keeps changing the rules just to keep you on your toes.

Each game uses different controls, most DOS games use the keyboard arrows. Some will use the mouse , "Alt" ,"Enter" and "Space bar".
