Shark Attack came out for the Atari 2600 in 1982, developed by Activision. It was one of those early games that tried to capture a simple, tense idea with the limited graphics and sound of the time. You knew what you were getting into; it was straightforward, no frills, just you and the sharks.
You control a diver at the bottom of the screen, armed with a spear. Sharks swim in from the sides, moving in erratic zigzag patterns as they approach. Your goal is to spear them before they reach you. The sound design plays a big role; a low blooping noise increases in speed as a shark gets nearer, which really amps up the tension. The game gets progressively harder, with more sharks and faster movements. It feels like a race against your own nerves as much as against the game.
