Play Space Ace (Japan) Online

Dodge lasers, mash buttons, and watch Ace hilariously fail spectacularly—those gorgeous Don Bluth animations make even death entertaining. The SNES version’s a bit kinder, but you’ll still sweat figuring out when to jump or shoot.

Game Overview

Space Ace came to the Super Nintendo in 1994, a port of the laser disc arcade game by Cinematronics. It arrived during a time when the SNES was full of varied action titles, and this one stood out for its animated, cartoon-like presentation. It was a different kind of challenge compared to the platformers and RPGs dominating the system.

You control the hero, Ace, through a series of animated action sequences. Your main goal is to rescue your partner, Kimberly, from the villain Borf. The gameplay involves quick reaction commands; you press specific buttons when prompted to dodge obstacles, fire your blaster, or make a crucial jump. The difficulty comes from memorizing these sequences, as the timing is strict and mistakes send you back. Playing it feels like trying to direct an interactive cartoon where you only sometimes get to be the director.
