Game Overview

I first played T&C Surf Design on the NES back in 1988, a game published by Atlus that always stood out for its weird mix of sports and adventure. It wasn't trying to be another Mario or Zelda; it just dropped you into this oddball world where you could surf, skate, and even fight off giant bees with a bow and arrow. The game had a strange, almost experimental vibe that felt very much of its time, a product of developers trying to see what the NES could do beyond platformers and RPGs.

You control a surfer or skater, depending on the stage, and your main goal is to survive each screen while racking up points and avoiding obstacles. The gameplay shifts between side-scrolling surfing sections where you dodge rocks and sharks, top-down skateboarding areas where you grind on curbs and jump over gaps, and even brief adventure-style moments where you shoot arrows at enemies. The pacing is erratic, sometimes frantic and other times methodical, and the difficulty can spike without warning due to slippery controls and unpredictable enemy patterns. Playing it feels like navigating a chaotic, slightly broken playground where every success comes with a side of frustration.
