Game Overview

Test Drive came out in 1987 for MS-DOS, developed by Distinctive Software. In an era where many games were still simple arcade ports or text adventures, this one stood out for its focus on a specific fantasy: driving a fast car you couldn't afford in real life. It wasn't trying to be a full simulation; it was a straightforward, focused experience built around the thrill of speed and the tension of the chase.

You pick from a selection of high-performance sports cars, like a Ferrari or a Lamborghini, and then you're just driving. The goal is simple: go as far as you can without crashing or running out of gas, all while avoiding the police who wait to pull you over for speeding. The road scrolls smoothly toward you, one winding mountain pass after another, and you have to manage your speed carefully, downshifting for tight corners and watching for oncoming traffic. The difficulty comes from the unpredictable patrol cars and the limited fuel, forcing you to plan your bursts of acceleration. It feels tense and immediate, a pure rush of concentration where every second and every decision matters.

Each game uses different controls, most DOS games use the keyboard arrows. Some will use the mouse , "Alt" ,"Enter" and "Space bar".
