If you've ever wanted to feel like you're actually trapped in a haunted mansion from the early '90s, The Legacy: Realm of Terror nails that vibe perfectly. You pick one of eight characters—some are fighters, others are better at magic, and a few are just... weirdly good at first aid—then get dumped into this creepy 3D mansion where everything wants to kill you. I went with the detective first, thinking I'd outsmart everything, but turns out you really do need to learn some spells unless you enjoy getting mauled by shadow monsters.

The whole place feels alive in a way most DOS games didn’t back then. Your character gets tired, hungry, even injured in ways that aren’t just "lose HP." You’ll find spellbooks hidden in drawers, armor that actually matters in fights, and puzzles that make you flip between notes you’ve scribbled down. Combat’s real-time and messy—you’ll panic-swing a sword while backing into furniture more than once. And yeah, the graphics are blocky now, but the sound design? Still unnerving. That distant whispering when you enter a new room hasn’t aged a day.

It’s janky in places (good luck figuring out some mechanics without a manual), but there’s nothing else quite like it. You either escape the mansion or die trying—usually the latter at first.

Each game uses different controls, most DOS games use the keyboard arrows. Some will use the mouse , "Alt" ,"Enter" and "Space bar".
