Game Overview

Pool of Radiance came out for the NES in 1992, developed by Strategic Simulations, Inc. It was one of the few attempts to bring a full, complex Dungeons & Dragons computer RPG experience to the console, arriving late in the system's life when most games were simpler action titles. You manage a custom party of up to six adventurers, diving into the cursed city of Phlan to clear it of evil.

You control the entire party, moving them as a single unit through a top-down world, fighting monsters in turn-based combat on a separate tactical grid. The main goal is to reclaim the city district by district, which involves exploring every building, talking to NPCs for clues, and delving into dungeons filled with monsters and traps. The pacing is slow and deliberate, demanding careful management of spells, hit points, and equipment. It feels like solving a long, difficult puzzle where every fight could be your last.
