Combat Course was one of those shareware titles that came bundled on countless MS-DOS disks in the early 90s, a product of its time when simple, action-focused games were common. It didn't have a major publisher behind it, just a small team or possibly a single developer putting out a challenge for players looking for a quick, intense session.
You control a small soldier sprite, moving him through a series of single-screen arenas, each filled with enemy troops and obstacles. The goal is straightforward: clear every enemy from the screen to advance to the next, more difficult stage. Your main tools are a rapid-fire weapon and careful movement; you have to constantly strafe and backtrack to avoid enemy fire while picking off targets. The pacing is relentless, with enemies respawning or new ones entering from the edges if you take too long. It feels like a test of reflexes and spatial awareness more than strategy, a pure, demanding shootout that leaves little room for error.
Each game uses different controls, most DOS games use the keyboard arrows. Some will use the mouse , "Alt" ,"Enter" and "Space bar".
