Capcom released Dungeons & Dragons: Shadow over Mystara in 1996 for arcades, a time when side scrolling beat 'em ups were common sights in dimly lit rooms. It was the second game in their D&D arcade series, building on the foundation of Tower of Doom with more characters and a deeper set of rules pulled from the tabletop game.

You control one of six adventurers, like a fighter or a cleric, and you move from screen to screen clearing out monsters with swords, spells, and bows. The main goal is to fight through dungeons and forests to stop a dragon cult, but you'll constantly be sidetracked by branching paths and hidden treasure chests that require specific keys or items to open. The combat is fast and often overwhelming, with enemies swarming from all sides, and you have to manage a limited inventory of potions and magic rings. Playing it feels like a frantic, cooperative scramble where every coin spent continues a desperate fight for survival.
