Game Overview

Fighters History Mizoguchi Kiki Ippatsu!! came out for the Super Nintendo in 1995, published by Data East. It was one of many fighting games trying to grab attention during the genre's peak on the system, a time when arcade style brawlers were everywhere. The game didn't have the budget or recognition of its bigger rivals, but it carved out a small space for itself with a unique, almost awkward personality.

You pick a fighter from a modest roster and battle through a series of one on one matches. The main goal is to defeat each opponent and become the champion. The game's signature mechanics include targeting an opponent's weak spot, which flashes when hit, and landing special moves that can turn the tide of a match if timed right. Matches can feel a bit stiff and the pacing is slower than some of the faster, more fluid fighters of the era, but there's a strange satisfaction in landing a well placed punch that causes the screen to shake and your rival to stagger. It feels like playing a rough draft of a great idea, charming in its own clumsy way.
