Super Castlevania IV came out for the Super Nintendo in 1991, developed by Konami. It was one of those early SNES titles that really showed what the system could do, with its detailed backgrounds and moody atmosphere. It felt like a proper step up from the NES games, not just in looks but in how it controlled.

You play as Simon Belmont, moving through the castle screen by screen, using your whip to attack enemies, break candles for hearts and other items, and find key items to progress. The big new feature was the ability to whip in eight directions; you could swing it overhead, crouch and strike low, or even hold it out to deflect certain projectiles. The pacing is deliberate, with careful jumps and constant enemy pressure, but the controls are responsive and make you feel capable. It's a game that rewards patience and pattern recognition, and there's a real satisfaction in mastering the flow of each room.
